New Hospital Future Law as a Pioneer of Health 4.0

The need for digital technologies in the health care system has existed not only since the emergence of the corona pandemic. However, recent events have shown that digitisation in Germany has not yet been sufficiently advanced in many areas, including the health sector. The Krankenhauszukunftsgesetz (KHZG – Hospital Future Act) passed in September is now intended to accelerate the process. The Federal Government and the Länder are providing a total of more than four billion euros for a digital update to enable investment in modern emergency capacities, digitisation and IT security.

Provisions of the KHZG

The promotion of digital technologies in health care is of great importance. Especially in times of a pandemic, the importance of a functioning health care system with well-equipped hospitals becomes clear. The safe care of patients has the highest priority, which is why promotion is a major necessity. The total volume of funding is up to €4.3 billion, of which €3 billion comes from the hospital future fund. This is an extension of the already existing hospital structure fund and allocates funds for more modern and better equipment of hospitals. The remaining € 1.3 billion in investment funds is to be provided by the Länder.

The funding is to go towards modern emergency capacities and an improved digital infrastructure. This includes patient portals, electronic documentation of care and treatment services, digital medication management and IT security measures. In addition, cross-sectoral telemedical network structures between hospitals or between hospitals and outpatient facilities are to be promoted. This will create an additional telemedical offer for patients.

Digitally protecting the most valuable asset

Digitisation can facilitate processes in various areas of life – including the protection of the highest good, health. Digital Health Care brings innovative healthcare applications to life that bring together and network. Digital and networked technology can help all service providers and service providers in the sector and can improve care. Above all, the patient benefits from improved, more efficient and cost-effective medical care. Experts emphasise the importance and priority of the Health 4.0 vision among all actors in the health industry, which clearly justifies political investment in innovation.

Technological companions are needed to make the transition to digital healthcare. eKiosk GmbH develops hardware and software for a wide range of applications, which makes processes more efficient and meets a high quality standard. Self-service devices for automated patient check-in, information steles or payment terminals facilitate and accelerate processes and relieve staff. This frees up more capacity for patient care. The acute shortage of specialists in the health and care sector can also be countered in this way.
